Ok people we're looking for a game that everyone at BDI can play at once, and we mean EVERYBODY. So what we are looking for out there is something that fits this:

  • Multiplayer game with LAN support

  • Up to 1000 simultaneous players

  • Dedicated server support (if applicable)

  • Dead easy and simple to get into

  • Runs on most platforms (optional, must support windows at the very least)

If you think of a game that fits the above description please post about it in the comments under this news item.

I think you'll have trouble finding a game which supports 1,000 players, and even if it did, imagine the lag... not to mention that most people's machines won't be able to handle it.

On the other hand, if it was something like an RPG, Everquest kind of game?, then you wouldn't have too much of a problem...

Good luck though! :P

Yeah I was thinking we could run something lke Ultima Online with one of the fake local servers, but it would be too much messing around and a simple shoot em up of some kind would be preferable..

BorrisTheBulletDodger: unforutnantly you can't start a Half Life server with a playerlimit greater than 32 players... And its rather cpu intensive to boot, we would need something like a 10Ghz server to run it decently.

How about Operation Flashpoint, it can handle hundreds of players (I think) and can be played by anyone with expereince with first person shooters. Either that or something like Tribes or Tribes 2

The only problem with traditional FPS games is that they are very server intensive. OFP has massive maps I doubt can handle 1000 players.

Pwoah!

That would be sick. That would have to be a world record for a LAN game surely?

I dont know of any games though...As Mordain said, maybe a MUD or something? I reakon everyone would play if it was part of a world record atempt or something....why not?

Another issue you would probably face if you did find a game that can do what you ask is how would everyone play? wouldn't it be against the rules to give it to evryone? Unless you got a special license from the developers. But I hope everyone has BF1942 expansion so we can play with something like 72 players.

Thinking along the same lines as LOTUK... whichever game is attempted, is it going to be available (to buy)? Maybe a discount price due to bulk? :)

Yep Soldat is great!
But I'm yet to play it in a 1000 player game :)

It would be very very crowded unless a huge map was created.

Even if you could do this i dont think 1000 people would all WANT to play it.

But what you could do it to announce a "massive period". ALl the servers are taken down and fewer, but set to max player limit (32/64) are started up and you tell everyone on the mic that we are having large games time - eg a few 64 player beef, 32 player q3 instagic (that owned back at ~s20) and so on.

MUD = Multi-User Domain. A text based representation of "rooms" in which the user interacts through text commands inputted via a console. Due to it's low-data usage and low memory usage it is the perfect option for 1000 players. Oldschool fun, if you want to check it out try www.mudconnect.com

I happen to know of some MUD source code that I could acquire by next weekend and I reckon that my system'd be able to handle the server side of things: XP 1700+, 512MB PC2700 DDR-RAM, two (2) 10/100 Network cards.

And I'm not talking about brand new, stock standard code, either, I'm talking about a living, breathing MUD that runs 24/7.

cant remember the original name, but it got changed to Subspace, then they started charging for it.

if you could find the server side for it, all people need to run is the demo...

subspace is a mm online game, 2d space shooter, deathmatch style, or ctf etc.

it seems to be going through another name change, this time to "Continuum .37"

talk to the owners and see if something can be arranged

Subspace/Continuum, seems to be freeware, as well as the server.... I couldn't find the max number of players, but I think that it can handle > 500 :)

The server side of things is the difficult bit.. maybe at some point in the future the clients will be able to handle some of the processing requirements of the server, ala distributed.net :)

And I think if you tried a MUD, you'd get 10 people playing. No one cares about a stupid text game, even if it is living, breathing, and great fun (once you spend an hour learning how to play). You may as well have a forum instead and tell 1000 people to log into it.

Although not a game, a lan-wide distributed.net effort (or similar) might be interesting if we can get net access for a server to transfer work units... I noticed some other lans create accounts with their favourite number-crunching group and see how high they can get the count in one lan. Could be interesting..?

I can't get my hands on the MUD code base that I said that I might be able to. The MUD appears to have disappeared totally into the void with no news as to why.

... oh yeah, i forgot about UO being payed to play online only, lets do it 1000 player Ulitma offline, we were gonna do a 300 at a lan here but i'd say just haveing 1000 ppl in the one server would be awsome, non-the-less slightly laggy

There is an open source implementation of Battle.net that could be used. See below:

The bnetd project is a collaboration focusing on development of a server that attempts to emulate Blizzard's Battle.net gaming server. The bnetd project is run by volunteers and is neither supported by nor affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment.

A major part of the effort is supporting most of the battle.net compatible games. Currently it supports Diablo 1, Starcraft, Warcraft 2 BNE, and some of the Diablo 2 connections. The server may eventually support some non-Blizzard clients as well, but no work is currently being done in that area. Certain software in addition to the bnetd server should also be considered part of the bnetd project. This includes BNS (BNetd Selector), bnchat (a text-based chat client), the BNI utilities, and bntrackd (BNetd TRACKing Daemon). All the software is licensed under the GNU GPL. The bnetd team also produces documentation for these programs and the battle.net protocol.

You will still need your original copy of a Blizzard game in order to connect to the bnetd server. The bnetd project does not condone the use of illegally duplicated games being used to play on bnetd servers.

Go to http://www.bnetd.org to check it out.

bnetd is not going to let everyone play the same game at once

you could have everyone playing starcraft, but not on the same battlefeild
